About the River City Racers Speed Skating Club
In 2005 there was a recognized need by the Turnbull, Spence, McGowan, Ellis, Wynne and Van Shea families for a new speed skating club in the community of Kamloops and area. One that focused on youth, skater development and fostered a caring enviroment of respect, honesty, and responsibility. The River City Racers is especially indebted to the Kelowna Speed Skating Club who provided unconditional mentorship and access to their resources in the club's first year of operation. The river City Racers offers both Short Track and Long Track speed skating programs and facilities - the only speed skating club west of Calgary and South of Prince George to do so. The first 400m Long Track speed skating oval in this area was created on Logan Lake in January 2005 with the asistance of the Logan Lake ATV club. The Wynne family was instrumental in the creation fo the long track oval. The first Polar-Thon (winter triathlon) was held on February 4, 2005 which included a speed skating component on this newly created ice surface.
Short track ice practice sessions are held in Kamloops at the McArthur Island Sports Complex and the Ice Box.
