Josie Spence Wins Bronze Medal

River City Racers Speed Skating Club, Josie SpenceIn Calgary Josie Spence (18yrs) and a member of the Kamloops River City Racers, was competing in the regional junior world cup of long track speed skating at the Calgary Olympic Oval. On the first day of racing Josie won the bronze medal in the 3000m event in a time of 4:17:88.  First place went to Nene Sakari of Japan in a time of 4:17:17 and second place to Saori Toi, also of Japan, in a time of 4:17:75.  The next Canadian to place was Kate Hanly in 5th spot in a time of 4:21:67.
The five top Canadian  junior female skaters were selected to participate in each distance. Josie qualified to compete in all three distances on day one of the competition. She placed 4th in the 500m and 4th in the 1000m with a new personal best and provincial record of 1:19:26.
Younger sister, Sara ( 16yrs) qualified to compete in the 500 and 1000m distances. She set personal bests in each distance and placed 8 in the 500 in 41.65 and 11th in the 1000m in a time of 1:24.80.
Tomorrow , the second and last day of this competition, Josie will be competing in all three distances again - the 500, 1500 and 5k mass start.  Sara has qualified to race in the 500m
Brother Eric (14) was racing in the canam competition ( and one of the youngest skaters competing) - which is an open category of senior skaters and junior skaters that did not make world cup - from several different countries ( mostly USA and Canada).  Eric set personal bests in both races he competed in today - he was 88th in the 500m in a personal best time of 44.8 and 76th in the 1000m in a time of 1:28.65. He will race a 500 and 1500m tomorrow.
