Latest News Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club

The Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club took part in ‘Classic Chill’ event this weekend at McArthur arena.  This was an ability meet where skaters of similar abilities race against each other.  Claire Riel, 9 years of age, was racing in her first competition and climbed from an initial last place seeding in division 2 to finish in first place and set 4 personal best times.  Finn Bogetti Smith, 12, also set 4 personal bests racing in division 5.  Sister, Summer, 9, set 3 new best times in Division 3.  Also racing in division 3 were team mates Noah Lara and John Hill - both raced to 2 personal best times.  Calvin Forbes (15) raced in Division 6 and set personal best in each distance he raced, the 200m, 400m, 500m, 1000m, and 1500m events.
Next weekend the River City Racers will be in action at two events.  Calvin Forbes will be racing in the Matsqui short track interclub competition and  Josie Spence will be racing in the World Cup #1 Long Track competition in Calgary.

Calvin Forbes and Eric Spence, of the Kamloops River City Racers, took part in their first competition of the season this weekend at the Mission Leisure Centre in Mission BC. Both raced in Division 1 and set season best times in all distances raced.  Calvin set a new personal best in his 500m eclipsing his old time by 5 seconds.  Calvin finished 3rd in the B final of the 1000m and 500m events and 7th in the A final of the 1500m distance.  Eric finished 2nd in the 500m, 1000m and 1500m races in the A final.
More racers will be in competition this weekend at the Classic Chill event held in Kamloops at McArthur Arena.

Calgary - Victoria, Josie, and Sara Spence, members of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club and now training in Calgary, swept the podium in the Long Distance Ladies World Cup Trials event today.  Josie finished first with sisters Victoria and Sara finishing second and third respectively.

It was Josie Spence's third top-3 result of the World Cup competition, after she came up with third place in Thursday's 3000m and a third place in Friday’s 5000m.

“The win means so much more to me because I had my sisters on the podium with me,” said Josie Spence. “It's encouraging and we're pushing each other to be stronger.”

“Personally, I was really happy that a couple skaters that had a race plan phased out quicker. That gives me the advantage because I have more endurance than some of the faster skaters,” also explained Josie Spence, who was fourth in this discipline last season at the national level. “I sat in front and felt really relaxed, and then punched it at the end. Mass start is a waiting game, and I definitely waited it out in the right way.”

Other results for the siblings today included an 8th place finish for Victoria in the 1500m world cup trials with a new personal best time of 2:02.39.  Unfortunately Josie did not finish the race due to a crossover problem during the event.  Sara finished 4th over the same distance in the October Invitational portion of the competition in a new personal best time of 2:06.86.  On Saturday Victoria and Sara finished third and fourth respectively in the 1000m event of the October Invitational Competition.

The 57 skaters who took part in the World Cup Trials competition, held at the same time as the Oval Invitational events, were attempting to earn a spot on the team that will represent Canada at the first four ISU Long Track Speed Skating World Cup stages slated for this fall, i.e. in Calgary (November 13-15), Salt Lake City, USA (November 20-22), Inzell, Germany (December 4-6) and Heerenveen, Netherlands (December 11-13).

The list of Canadian team members will be announced over the next few weeks ahead of the first ISU Long Track World Cup of the season, set to take place from November 13 to 15 at Calgary's Olympic Oval.
