Sisters Tori and Josie Spence, members of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club training with the National development team in Calgary, qualified to compete in four distances at the Canadian Single Distance Long Track Speed Skating Championships held at the Calgary Oval over the last four days. Tori raced to a bronze medal finish in the women’s long distance event. Josie’s best performance came in the 1500m event where she placed fourth. The sisters where also vying for a spot on the women’s all round team which is a combination of the 500m, 1500m, and 3000m events. Josie finished third all round behind 2014 Olympians Ivanie Blondin of Ontario and Kali Christ of Saskatchewan. Tori placed fifth in the all round field. The allround women’s and men’s World Championships will be held in Calgary on March 7th and 8th. Final team selection will be announced later this week which will determine which skaters will be skating at the remaining world cup and championship events.

Speed Skating Canada named its 2014 award winners in Ottawa earlier this season and Kamloops athlete Tori Spence was recognized.
Tori Spence of the Kamloops River City Racers earned a Peter Williamson Memorial Trust Fund Bursary.

The Williamson Bursaries were handed out to athletes who best combine athletic and scholastic achievement, have the ability to communicate well with coaches and fellow skaters and show elements of leadership and are positive role models for other athletes.
