Latest News Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club

Josie Spence completed her racing in Berlin at her third World Cup this Fall. Again, the women’s pursuit team just missed the podium with a fourth place finish. This time they were faster than the German team but the Polish team snuck ahead of them both. First place went to the Netherlands, second to Poland, and third to Japan. In the 1500m individual event Josie was the top Canadian finisher in the B division in 15th spot and finished a season’s best placing in 12th in the 3000m B event and was again the top Canadian finisher. The fourth and final Fall World Cup Competition will be held in Heerenveen this coming weekend (December 12 - 14)

Siblings Sara (18) and Eric Spence (16), members of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club, qualified for the Canada Winter Games Long Track Speed Skating Team this weekend at the Pomeroy Sport Centre Oval in Ft St John, BC. Four females and four males were named to the team that will represent BC at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George in February 2015. Sara finished in the first place position for the women’s team and Eric secured the fourth spot on the men’s team. Sara also competed in the Canada Cup #1 competition that ran along side the BC team qualifying events. The Canada Cups attract the top male and top female skaters (outside the national team who are currently on the world cup circuit) from across Canada. Sara had an amazing weekend of racing placing on the podium in 4 of her 5 events at the Canada Cup. She was third in the 500, 1500, and 3000 races, and silver in the mass start event. She set a new junior ladies track record for the 500m distance in a time of 41.5. Sister Victoria Spence was on the podium for the 3000m and mass start event with silver and gold medal performance respectively. Sister Josie will be competing December 5 - 7 in Berlin, in her third World Cup event this fall.

Olympic medalist Clara Hughes was in town last night, we were very fortunate to be invited to a social with her prior to her talk that evening. Thanks Clara for sharing your time with us.
