Latest News Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club

Calgary - Sara Spence (18), a member of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed skating club, was selected to represent Canada in the Regional Junior World Cup Long Track Competition this past weekend at the Calgary Oval. Skaters from Canada, USA and Japan were competing.   Sara qualified to compete in all the Junior events at this competition.   Sara picked up her first World Cup medal in the team sprint event.  Canada won silver, Japan won gold, and US took the  third position.  Teamates Maddy Pearman from Alberta and Juliette Wheeler from Saskatchewan joined Sara in her silver medal performance.
Sara’s best individual result came in the 3k event where she placed 4th with a 3 sec personal best time of 4:30.1.  Sara was 6th in the 500m event, 6th in the mass start long distance event, 7th in the 1000m setting a new personal time by 1 second at 1:20.65, and was 8th in the 1500m with a personal best by .5 seconds at 1:08.14.
Elder sister Victoria (22) , raced in the CanAm Long Track competition that ran alongside the Junior World Cup and finished in the silver medal position in the 3k event. Victoria  set a 1 one second personal best time at 4:13.88.  First place went to Fu Chunyan of China with a time of 4:12.93
Eric Spence (16) was also competing in the Can Am competition and set three personal best times; a 1 second personal best in the 500m for a new time of 41.20; a .7 sec improvement in the 1000m for a new time of 1:21.95; and was 4 seconds faster over the 1500m distance with a new time of 2:06.75.
Meanwhile Josie Spence (20) was competing in Seoul Korea at her second world cup event this fall. She placed 9th in the 1500m B final and 14th in the 5k B final.  Last weekend, in Obihiro Japan,  Josie missed a World Cup Bronze Medal in the team pursuit event by only 0.16 seconds to the German Team.  Josie’s individual results at this first world cup event included a 7th place finish in the A final long distance mass start event, and 13th place finish in the 3k B final.  Josie’s next stop will be Berlin Germany at the third world cup in this series.  This event will be held December 5 - 7th. 
Sara and Eric Spence will be competing in Ft St John next weekend - November 28th - 30th - at Canada Cup #1.  This event will also serve as the qualifier for the Canada Winter Games Long Track speed skating team.

Prince George - Eric Spence, 16 years of age and a member of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club, competed at the Canada Winter Games selection trials for Short Track Speed Skating this weekend at the CN Centre in Prince George.  Eric was competing, along with the other top male short trackers in BC between the ages of 14 and 20 years, for one of 5 spots on the male team to represent BC at the Canada Winter Games in February 2015.  Eric qualified through the initial 9 lap pursuit race which determined the top 16 skaters who would be allowed to continue on in the selection races.  Eric placed 8th in this event.  Eric was 3rd to cross the finish line in the 3k points race, 5th in the 1500m, 6th in the 500m setting new personal best time by over a second at  45.78; and was 10th in the 1000m.  Eric finished the competition as the alternate to the team.  The official team composition will not be announced until the beginning of December 2014.  Eric plans to also participate in the Long Track Speed Skating Selection trials, along with his sister Sara Spence,  which will be held at the Pomeroy Sports Centre in Fort St John November 28 - 30th. Skaters cannot compete in both short track and long track disciplines at the Canada Winter Games.

Speed Skaters

Burnaby, BC - Skater of the Year Awards were presented to sisters Tori and Josie Spence at this year’s BC Speed Skating AGM in Burnaby on May 31. Tori Spence received the Skater of the Year National Female Long Track award while the national male Long Track award went to Denny Morrison of Ft St John. BC.  Josie Spence received the Skater of the Year Provincial female award with Nick Goplen of Kelowna picking up the equivalent male award. Both sisters are members of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club and train at the Calgary Olympic Oval over the winter months.
