All three Spence sisters, members of the Kamloops River City Racers, were in action at this weekend’s Canada Cup #3 Long track speed skating competition.  This event also serves as the National Junior Championships.  Sara (18) the youngest of the three sisters was competing in the Junior National Championships and finished with a bronze medal in the 500m event.  She set a personal best time in this event establishing a new time of 43.65 surpassing her old time of 44.59.  She also set a personal best in the 1000m with a new time of 1:27.08.  Her old time was 1:32.02 set in Quebec earlier this season.  Sara is in contention to make a spot on the Junior World team that heads to Bjugn Norway for the Junior World Championships on March 14,15,and 16.  However, due to extreme weather conditions the last day of competition in Saskatoon, the final two qualifying races for this event had to be cancelled.  It is unknown at this time how the final selection process will take place but generally the selection committee will look at results from the previous Canada Cup event - which would be CC #2 held in Calgary early January.  Sara did not post times as fast as her main competitors at this event as Sara’s racing has been improving since January.

Sisters Josie (19) and Victoria (21) raced in the CC #3 competition this past weekend in Saskatoon.  Josie had two podium finishes with a gold in the 3k event and a silver coming in the 1500m.  Victoria finished with a silver in the 3k event. The top three Canadian athletes over these distances are currently heading to Sochi for the Olympic Games and were not competing in Saskatoon. Points earned on the Canada Cup circuit go towards securing the athlete’s spot on the national training teams.

Sara Spence (18 yrs), a member of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club competed at the North American Speed Skating Championships over the weekend at the Olympic Oval in Calgary. Sara was competing in the Junior Women’s Division and raced to two silver medal finishes - one came in the  500m distance and the other in the 1500m event.  In the latter she set a new personal record of 2:09.52 surpassing her old time of 2:11.12.   Jessica Tandiman of the United States took gold in both of these races.  Sara also raced to a bronze medal in the 1000m distance.

Victoria and Josie both qualified to compete for a spot on Canada's national team for Sochi in three distances - 1500, 3k and 5k events.  Josie placed 5th in the 3k event and Victoria 8th - the top two finishers in this distance were selected to join the Olympic team.  In the 1500m Josie came the closest to making the team - she was off a qualifying spot by less than a second placing 7th. Victoria placed 16th over the same distance.  In the 5k event only the top finisher was selected for the Olympic Team.  Josie placed 3rd and Victoria 5th.  Both were happy with their efforts and may already have their sights set for Korea in 2018!
