Latest News Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club

River City Racer Alex Forbes, 15 yrs old, was officially awarded a spot on the zone 2 BC winter games team and will be joining Eric Spence (15 yrs) for that event in Mission, BC in mid February.

Calgary - Sara Spence, 18 years old, and a member of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club, competed at the Canada Cup #2 competition in Calgary over the weekend and finished 5th in the 3k event. (skaters competing for a spot on the Olympic team did not race in this competition). Sara also set two personal bests. She placed 6th, and set a new mark in the 1k event with a time of 1:23.32, her previous time was 1:24.2.  She lowered her 1500m time by .3 sec setting her new personal best at 2:11.12 and placing 10th.  She came 7th in the 500m.  Sara’s next competition will be the North American Championships in Calgary on January 18 and 19.

Several skaters from the Kamloops River City Racers speed skating club competed at the Kelowna inter club this past Saturday. This meet also served as the zone 2 BC Winter Games qualifier for skaters between the ages of 13 and 16 years of age. The top two racers in each category will automatically qualify for the BC Winter Games team to be held in Mission in February. Third place positions may also qualify if Zone 2 is given extra spots (wild cards). Eric Spence, 15 years, swept his 15/16 yr male category taking first place in each of his distances raced, 500, 1000, 1500, and 3k points race. Alex Forbes, 16yrs, placed third overall in this division. It was not known at the time of this release if Alex will receive one of the 'wild card’ positions. Calvin Forbes (14) placed 5th overall in the male 13/14 division. For more information on the BC Games go tohttp://www.bcgames.org/
In the inter club portion of the meet, first time racer Noah Lara (8 yrs) competed in division 9 and established personal bests in each distance raced winning his final 200m event. Finn Bogetti Smith (10) raced in division 7. He had some tough luck early in the day, falling in several of his races but went on to win his final 200m race. Sister Summer Bogetti Smith (8 yrs) was in division 8 skating to several personal best times with 2 seconds and one third place finish.

All three Spence sisters were in action at the Gatean Boucher oval over the weekend, competing at the first Canada Cup of the season.  Canada Cups are were the skaters earn points, based on their performances, to qualify for national and development teams for the next season of competition. Eldest sister, Tori, skated to a personal best time and a silver medal finish in the 5k event.  Her new time is 7:58.27 surpassing her old time of 8:09.92.  Tori also had a 5th place finish in the 3k event and a 12th place finish in the 1500m race.  Josie, medaled in two distances with a bronze in the 5k event, just behind her sister, and a silver finish in the 3k event.  Josie just missed the medals in the 1500m with a fourth place finish.  Youngest sister Sara raced to 4 personal best times (there are indoor times and outdoor time).  Her best overall place was a 12 place finish in the 3k event with a new time of 5:01.62 - an 8 second personal best.  She was 16th in the 1500m with a 3 second pb and new time of 2.20.14, was 19th in the 1000m with a 1.5 sec personal best of 1:32.02 and was 21st in the 500m with a new time of 44.59 (.3 sec better). An interesting result was the 3k event where British Columbia had the most skaters of any province placing in the top 12 - with four skaters.  Three of these four skaters were from the Kamloops River City Racers club!!

Several River City Racers will be competing at the Kelowna short track inter club next weekend.  This event also includes the qualifier for the BC winter games.  Calvin and Alex Forbes, as well as Eric Spence will be representing the Racers and contending for a spot at these games.
