Latest News Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club

Kamloops River City Racers took part in the ‘Big Chill’ ability speed skating event this past weekend in Kamloops.  Veteran Racers, and sibling pairs Alex and Calvin Forbes (racing in division 4) and Finn and Summer Bogetti-Smith were in full action setting personal bests in their racing divisions.  Alex (15) raced to 4 personal best times and had a first place finish in his 200m heat.  Brother Calvin (13) also had 4 personal bests.  Finn Bogetti Smith (10) raced in division 3 and set two personal best times with a win in the 200m heat.  Sister Summer (7) raced in division 2 and set 2 personal best times.  Also racing in division 2 and competing in their first competition were Patrick Gu (6) with 2 personal bests and a first place finish in the 200m heat; John Hill (6) with two personal best times; and Beckett Reid (7) with 3 personal bests and winning three of his heats!!

Eric and Sara Spence, members of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club, competed at the inaugural Western Canada Single Distance Short Track Championships in Richmond over the weekend.  This championships drew a field of 34 male and 34 female racers between the ages of 15 and 19 years.  Skaters competing were from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC, Yukon, and the NWT.  
Eric, 15 yrs, raced to a 5 sec personal best time (2:29.96) in his final 1500m event with a second place finish in his C final (14th place overall). He placed 3rd in his C final of the 1000m for an 11th place overall, and he placed 2nd in the D final of his 500m for a 14th overall placing. 
Sara, 17, had a best overall placing of 5th in the A final of the 1500m.  The first four skaters in this race train full time at the Calgary Oval.  Sara continues to train out of her club in Kamloops and is finishing her grade 12 year at St Anns Academy.  Sara also raced to  a 2nd place finish in the 1000m B final for a 6th overall placing and finished 3rd in the B final of the 500m for a 7th overall finish.

Both siblings are in Calgary this week in preparation for their first Long Track competition of the season. The CanAm will be held November 22 through the 24th.

Eric Spence (15yrs), a member of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club, improved his total speed by a huge margin of 22 seconds in his combined times skated at the CanadianAmerican long track speed skating competition this past weekend in Calgary. This competition drew up to 112 male competitors per individual race and up to 73 female competitors per race. Most of the competitors were from Canada and the States. Eric set personal bests in each distance he raced and three of his new times met the national time standards so that he now qualifies to compete at the Canada Cup level.  He raced to a 1.5 second personal best in his 500m, a 3.5 sec personal best  in his 1500m, he was 6 seconds faster in his 1000m, and 11 seconds faster in his 3k event over last year’s performances.
Sister Sara (17yrs) also competed at this event and set personal bests in all her four distances raced.  Sara will be competing at Canada Cup #1 this coming weekend in Quebec City.  Eldest sibling, Victoria, raced to a personal best time in the 500m and finished 4th overall in the 3k distance.
Josie Spence speed skating, River City Racers Speed Skating Club  Josie Spence of Kamloops has qualified for the first four World Cups of the long track speed skating season.

Spence, 19, competed at Speed Skating Canada’s World Cup Fall Trials in Calgary, and finished in the top five in two distances. According to a Speed Skating Canada news release, “The top five racers in all distances qualify to race the first four World Cups of the season.”

Spence, a product of the River City Racers, finished third in the 5,000 metres on Sunday.

She also was fifth in the 1,500m.

The first two stops are in Calgary and Salt Lake City, before the World Cup circuit heads to Kazakhstan and Germany.
