The Spence sisters made the podium four times at the Canadian Single Distance Long Track Speed Skating Championships held over the last four days at Calgary’s Olympic Oval. Josie led the medal count with a silver in both the 1500m and 5k events and a bronze in the 3k distance.  Victoria received the bronze medal in the long distance mass start event.  Victoria also placed 4th in the 5k event, and 7th in both the 1500m and 3k.  Josie finished 5th in the long distance mass start event.  Youngest sister, Sara, qualified to race in the long distance mass start event, the 1500m and 1000m events and finished 9th, 12th and 14th respectively.
Skaters qualify to race in the  Canadian Single Distance Championships by meeting preset time standards.  The Winter World Cups and World Championship selection is based on the skater’s performance at these Championships. The World Cup team will be finalized in the next few days.
Canada Cup #2 ran at the same time as the Canadian Championships. Brother Eric, 17 years of age, competed in this event which was his first long track competition of the season. He set personal bests in both distances he raced - the 500m and 1000m.

Josie Spence a member of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club and Canadian Speed Skating Team - made it to the podium in her 4th World Cup of the season.  This is Josie’s first world cup medal.  Josie placed second in the B group of the 3000m event in a time of 4:10.80 just .1 behind the first place finisher Xin Zhao from China.  This result placed Josie in 11th spot overall and the fastest Canadian female over this distance today with team mate and fellow competitor Ivanie Blondin posting  a time of 4:11.45 in the A group.
Josie will be racing in the team pursuit event Saturday and the mass start long distance event on Sunday.

The River City Racers participated in this weekend’s interclub and BC winter games qualifiers at the Capital News Center in Kelowna. Calvin Forbes (16) qualified first in his age category and will be representing Zone 2 at the upcoming BC Winter Games in Penticton in February 2016.  Team mates John Hill (8) and Summer Bogetti-Smith (9) are too young to contend for a spot on the BC Games team but participated in the interclub portion of the competition.  John raced in division 2 and placed at the top of the division for the second interclub in a row.  He set three personal best times in the process.  Summer raced in division 3 placing 8th.  She also set three personal bests.

The River City Racers in partnership with the Overlander Ski Club and the Kamloops Summer Triathlon club, will be hosting a Winter Triathlon January 23rd at Stake Lake.  This event (was held in Logan Lake from 2005 - 2012) will be comprised of snow shoe, skate, and skiing disciplines.  More information to follow re race categories and distances.  (FYI - winter tri has taken off in Quebec where they are now running a ‘World’ Cup series ).
