The Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club held their Annual Awards and AGM over the weekend.  Special thanks to club sponsors Vince and Katrina Cavaliere from River City Reality who were available to congratulate the club's award winners. Kelly Smith, paralympian, silver medalist in Athens, and one of this weekends inductees into the Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame, was also in attendance to present awards to the skaters. Recognition and thanks were also given to club sponsors, Rob Splane of Sun Country Toyota Scion,  Alan Gozda of McDonalds, and St Ann's Academy.  The latter provided the space to host the event.

The Skater of The Year Award went to Sara Spence whose accomplishments this season included; provincial open women's long track champion; qualifying for both the short track and long track junior National Championships and placing third all round at the Junior long track Championships in Quebec.  The Most Improved Male Skater went to Alex Forbes and the Most Improved Female Skater went to Sophia Pankratz. Junior Coach of the Year was awarded to Eric Spence who also raced to first place finishes at both the provincial Long Track and Short Track Championships this season. The Sportsmanship award went to Calvin Forbes and the Volunteer of the Year Award went to Conny Forbes.

River City Racer's 2013/2014 executive include Michelle Wood - president; Francis Njenga - secretary; and Jim Forbes - treasurer.  
Ice sessions will resume in September 2013.  Please watch our website kamloopspeedskating.com, and like our face book page, to keep current on club activities and new club programs coming this fall - including a learn to speed skate program.

Vernon- The River City Racers were well represented at 2013 Interior-Okanagan Short Track FUNale event at the Wesbild Centre in Vernon this past Saturday. Several skaters clocked their best times of the season.  Representing the Racers in Division 1 were Alex Forbes (15) with 5 second place finishes, Calvin Forbes (12) with one third and four fourth place finishes, AJ Timewell (9) with one fourth and four fifth place finishes, and Finn Bogetti-Smith (9)  finishing with three second place finishes, one third and one fourth place finish.  In division 2 Margaret Jean (8)skated to one third, one fourth and three fifth place finishes.  In division 4 Summer Bogetti- Smith raced to one first, four third place finishes.  This concludes the racing events for these skaters for this season.  Ice time and racing will resume in October 2013.

Monday March 4, 2013 - Eric Spence (14), a member of the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club, raced to a gold medal finish in the 3000m points race at the Provincial Short Track Championships held in Mission over the weekend.  (This result for Eric was even more impressive given the fact Eric fell (was tripped) on lap 9 but managed to catch the pack by lap 17 and then go on to pass the pack and win the race). In Eric's other events he finished second in both the 1500m and 400m and fourth in the 200m pursuit.  Eric was competing in a field of 10 males in the T2T14 division and finished second overall. On the strength of these results Eric qualified to compete at the Western Canadian Championships to be held in Canmore BC March 23 and 24.  
In other action, eldest sister Tori (20), was competing at the North American Championships in Salt Lake City and raced to a 5th place finish in the 3k event and 9th place in the 1500m.
